Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie, who made 71 Test appearances for Australia, has given a ringing endorsement to his young batsman Joe Root after rumours he is in line to replace retired England captain Andrew Strauss at the top of the batting order.
Root, just 21-years-old, is highly rated by Yorkshire and the England Lions, and his name has been mentioned as a possible opening partner for new skipper Alastair Cook after Strauss’ shock retirement.
And Gillespie, who has just overseen Yorkshire’s LVCC division two victory against Gloucestershire, believes Root has the tools to go all the way.
Gillespie said: “I absolutely believe Joe would do a wonderful job for England should he be given the opportunity.
“I think if you’re good enough, you’re old enough, and he is definitely good enough.
“Joe has the right attitude to make it at the very top of the game. He’s a very respectful young man and he has the right worth ethic and dedication to succeed in the game.
“He’s batted really well for us this year and I would back him to do well should he get the nod for England too.”
