Scarborough RUFC will host a Yorkshire match again this year after lengthy discussions resulted in them being awarded the Durham clash.
Silver Royd played host to the Roses tie between Yorkshire and Lancashire in May last year, and the board of Yorkshire Rugby were suitably impressed enough to reward the Scalby Road club with another clash this season.
Club chief executive Graeme Young was delighted with the news that they had been awarded another prestigious fixture, with Durham the visitors to Silver Royd on Saturday May 18.
Young said: “It’s brilliant that we’ve been given another showpiece fixture this season.
“I think it might be a first for a club to be given Yorkshire fixtures in consecutive years, so it is a big pat on the back for everyone who gives up their time to help out at Scarborough RUFC.
“We’re always trying to get the highest possible level of rugby on at Silver Royd and by getting this game here again, we’re helping to promote the sport within Scarborough.
“Now we’ve got this game tied up we can start looking to get more big events on at the club this year.
“We will hopefully be able to announce bigger games at Silver Royd soon.”
Young admitted that discussions to get the game were lengthy and that the issues surrounding the club’s wranglings with the council over their application for a PA system at Silver Royd hampered their chances . Young added: “We’ll have the improved PA system in place in time for the game, which was a big factor in us getting a county match at Scarborough again.
“I don’t think they would have come back to us this time if we didn’t have the sound system.
“I had to attend several meetings, including a Yorkshire Rugby board meeting in Morley, until we finally got things signed at the last meeting recently.
“We learned a lot from last year’s game and we’re going to make sure we build on the successful game last time and make this one even better.
“We’ve got an improved marquee and corporate offering this time around and all tickets will be on sale later this month.”
Young also announced that the club will host a Yorkshirerugby.net select XV against an Overseas representative side match as a curtain raiser to the big match (12pm).
The club are also hoping to arrange an RAF parachute jump onto the Silver Royd pitch prior to the big kick-off (3pm).
Young is hoping that this announcement is just the start of a superb 2013 for the club.
He added: “Our first XV are in a cup quarter-final at Silver Royd soon, and if we get through that we know that the semi-final would be at home too.
“We’re not counting any chickens but we’re hopeful of a good cup run as we haven’t enjoyed one for a while now.
“Our first home game is also against Bridlington on January 12, which will be a cracker.”
