Two Scarborough Pirates players shone on the English Lionhearts tour of Ukraine, winning several trophies in the process.
Pirates skipper Dave Douthwaite and Harry Sleep were selected in the 21-man squad and both contributed as the touring side dominated from start to finish.
The touring side played a Test match against a tough and physical host side on Saturday in scorching 30 degree temperatures.
This didn’t hamper the visitors taking a 34-24 success.
Douthwaite, playing at prop, smashed over for one of the Lionhearts tries, while Sleep impressed at full-back in the hard-fought victory.
The pair then took their place in a four-team seven-a-side tournament on the Sunday.
Sleep was in imperious form as he utilised his great pace to score four tries and successfully kicked three conversions as the Lionhearts roared to victory.
A delighted Pirates skipper Douthwaite said: “On the whole it was a great experience for me.
“There was great coaching and I have met some lads that will now be friends for life.”
Sleep added: “It was a great place, both the sightseeing and the rugby were great.
“The 32 degree temperatures were difficult, but it couldn’t have gone better with a great group of lads.”
The pair will be in action this weekend as Adam Lee’s Pirates make the trip West Hull A in the Yorkshire Men’s Premier Division.
Keith Paddock’s A team welcome Stanley Rangers A in division four.
