Lee Douglas expects his Scarborough RUFC side to challenge at the upper echelons of Yorkshire One this season.

The Silver Royd Club open their new campaign at Selby on Saturday September 3, followed by games against York and East Coast rivals Bridlington.

Following the promotion of runaway top-two Bradford & Bingley and Malton & Norton last season, Douglas expects Yorkshire One to be wide open and insists Scarborough must challenge for honours.

He said: “It’s wide open this year, it looks like any one of a number of teams could challenge.

“It just takes a team to get some backing and they’ll no doubt be up there.

“We are the most organised at this stage of pre-season that I have seen since I came to the club and we have the makings of a very strong side this season.”

Douglas knows the trip to Selby won’t be easy, and he stresses the importance of a good start to gather some early momentum.

“Selby is never an easy place to go and win, we were unlucky there in the last of the season, we’ll need to be at our best to get a result.

“It’s important to get early wins and start as we mean to go on.

“I expect us to challenge. We have a strong side, but the guys have to buy into it and

put the effort in during pre-season.”
