It was great to be nominated for the Coach of the Year award at Monday’s Scarborough & District Sports Council Sports Awards ceremony.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get there for the awards night, but it was a nice surprise to be selected and to receive the runners-up award.

The club were well represented on the night and had several nominees and a winner in the shape of teenager Ben Martin, who won the junior boys under-18s award, with his teammate Joe Marshall the runner-up.

Ben has forced his way into the first-team this season, along with sveral other young players.

With the Valkyries team also nominated and coach Steve Purdy, it shows how well we are doing as a family club. This is something that we can be very proud of.

We won in dramatic circumstances on Saturday at Bradford Salem thanks to a Tom Ratcliffe drop-goal with the final kick of the match.

He had missed out narrowly with a similar attempt just a few minutes earlier, but he was not deterred and we snatched a win when a draw was probably the fair result, but as we have found out over the past season or so, teams can lose out late on even if they have played well.

It was nice to get the rub of the green after five or six matches last season when we seemed to lose out on the final play of the match.

We played very well in the first half and deserved a 10-0 half-time lead.

After the interval it was a stalemate until a soft try, while Liam Murray was off the pitch, allowed them to get back into the match.

It was becoming a very close and even game, but we looked very strong as a lot of players were coming back from injury including James Leach who was very impressive.

We entertain York on Saturday and after playing on a narrow pitch last week with a deteroriating surface, we can hopefully make the most of our impressive pitch at Silver Royd.

Jordy Wakeham is out of the reckoning for the derby game through injury, but otherwise we have a full squad to choose from.

If we can keep the winning run going then we may well push for a top four spot.
