I have to congratulate our first team manager David ‘Spook’ Smith on his Volunteer of the Year honour at the 2014 Sports Awards on Monday.

Every club needs a man like Spook in their ranks to function effectively.

It’s only on therare occasions Spook misses a game that you tend to realise what he does - he puts in a massive effort for this club.

It’s known throughout the club that Spook has had a very difficult time battling illness for such a young man, and it is testament to his character that he has come through that and also fulfilled his commitment to Scarborough RUFC.

While I have to say that Spook is the only person more miserable than me at the club, I congratulate him on his honour, it is fully deserved.

We picked up a good win on the road at Old Brodleians on Saturday on a difficult pitch and I was delighted with the performance of the guys.

We’re starting to control games better now and make better decisions too and we need to carry that into the game against Pontefract at home on Saturday.

They’re another team below us in the league, but we’ve been guilty in the past of lowering our standards against poorer sides and we need to make sure we don’t do that.

Good luck to the women’s side in their first game against Barnsley on Saturday too.
