Lee Douglas: Old Brods was worst performance of the season

From our massive effort against Blackburn in our National Cup quarter-final the week before, we managed to follow that up with our worst performance of the season on Saturday.

Old Brods quite simply wanted it more than us on the day, and while you have to give credit to them, we were very poor.

Yes, the Blackburn game took a lot out of us, but there wasn’t much, or any, desire to win the game on our part, which was disappointing.

We really didn’t perform at all.

This is nothing new. We have been inconsistent all season long and it’s difficult to pinpoint why we can’t put better performances in on a more regular basis.

We had to make a few changes, but it was a great chance for some of the lads to come into the team and put down a marker for the semi-final squad.

There were so many players who failed to step up to the plate on Saturday.

We just didn’t deal with their back row.

They ran everything and a lot stemmed from the possession they had and the yards their number eight was constantly making.

One small positive was young James Leach, who came on in the second row.

He was fantastic when he came on and we couldn’t have asked for more from the lad.

It would have been nice for some of his more experienced teammates to step up and support him, but that wasn’t the case.

James has now put in a great claim for a place in the semi-final against Bridgnorth, I’m sure he will be there or thereabouts.

We have a huge game at Pontefract on Saturday and the guys really need to put in a good performance there to carry some confidence and momentum into our huge semi-final.

One thing is certain, anything less than our best against Bridgnorth won’t be enough to take us into the Twickenham final.

Tomasz Chadwick travelled down to watch them on Saturday, but their opponents failed to turn up.

Whether or not you can read anything into that is another matter, we will need to be ready.
