There were plenty of positives to take from Saturday’s defeat against table-toppers Bradford & Bingley at Silver Royd.

I’ve said ever since I came to the club that on our day we have the ability to trouble any of the teams at this level, and we showed that on Saturday despite missing a lot of our key players.

The players did exceptionally well against a side that are the best we’ve come up against this season by a country mile.

They will go on to win the league comfortably this season, and we managed to match them blow-for-blow for large parts of the game.

They had some outstanding individual moments of brilliance that crept them over the line and I don’t think any of us had any qualms over the result after the 80 minutes.

Despite that, it’s always frustrating to lose out when you’ve put so much into a game and matched your opponents.

There were a few pleasing individual efforts from our point of view, none more so than Richard Scales, who was my choice as man of the match.

When I came to the club, Richard was playing as a scrum-half for the Vikings, now I believe he’s one of the best openside-flankers we have at Scarborough.

He was superb on Saturday, and as well playing out of his skin, he also toughed it out and didn’t shirk the dirty work at any point.

You can’t teach that, and Richard has grit and determination in abundance.

Isaac Faamau was impressive yet again, but he’s been superb since he came to the club.

Drew Govier also put in a solid performance on Saturday and I think big Wes Langkilde had one of his best games for the club.

It was great to see Wes doing what we had asked of him during the week and not stood out on the wing. He really got involved, which was pleasing.

We travel to Hullensians on Saturday and we’ll need to be wary of their pace on the counter-attack.

They’re a good, solid unit and they break very quickly, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for that.

Jack Ireland and Ben Martin should come back in.
