We showed glimpses of what a great side we can be at Ikley on Saturday.
The first 20 minutes we were exceptional and I don’t think they knew what had hit them.
But they managed to get back into the game through a mixture of our mistakes and their blatantly obvious efforts to make the game scrappy and effectively try and beat us up.
This comes back to something I have said countless times to the guys. They need to buy into what we’re trying to achieve here and get to training twice a week.
We’ve got some guys who turn up rain or shine and train hard twice a week, and we need more of that.
Some turn up once a week and some twice, and we might not get that level of consistency until people really get stuck into their training.
The guys have got a real opportunity here to do something special and they’ve got to grasp that with both hands and start working harder.
I have to say things didn’t go our way at all at Ilkley.
Although a mistake on our 22 cost us when we were cruising in the first half, I was really impressed with how we defended and then stood up to the Ilkley onslaught.
They suddenly realised that they couldn’t outplay us and decided to try and beat us up instead, which really disappointed me as you don’t expect that from an Ilkley side.
Their hooker took a few cheap shots at Nino Cutino and he had to have stitches and was on and off due to the cut for the rest of the game, which really upset our structure on the field.
Ilkley didn’t do themselves any favours with their behaviour and it didn’t reflect well upon their club.
I have to give some credit to our guys though. Nino led the side superbly, and Charlie Hoggard was absolutely outstanding as well.
