The guys put in another strange performance on Saturday against a side who I wasn’t sure had come to play rugby or have a fight.
Acklam were very ill-disciplined and really managed to make the game a scrappy affair in the second half.
We really need to toughen up if teams want to come over and turn games into a scrap.
But having said that, the guys did all they had to do in the first half.
There were very encouraging signs at times and we could and probably should have run a handful more tries in at certain moments in the game.
Graeme Jeffrey ran into touch and Benji Cottle had the ball ripped out of his hands when he was about to touch down, so those points would have polished off the scoreline a bit.
We definitely took our foot off the gas after the break though when we should have ripped them to bits.
Instead of going at them and putting more points on the board, we sat back and let them play, which wasn’t great.
It is still very difficult for me to judge performances at the moment.
We have won both our two opening Yorkshire One clashes, but haven’t performed anywhere near our best.
Saturday was another example of that, we made a lot of good running and created the space needed to execute our plans, but at times we didn’t step up.
The real tests will come when we step up in class of opposition, and I believe that starts Saturday at Heath.
They’ve had a couple of good wins and are a tough outfit, so the guys will need to put in their best performance to date if we’re going to win.
Potential only gets you so far, we need to start fulfilling it.
