Scarborough RUFC skipper Matty Jones insists his side must stay composed in their derby battle with Yorkshire One table-toppers Bridlington at Silver Royd on Saturday.

The Dukes Park side are setting the pace at the top of the Yorkshire One table this season, with the gap between the East Coast rivals at 23 points after both sides were beatn by York and Heath respectively at the weekend.

Jones said: “In the past when we’ve played Brid, we’ve been guilty of overthinking things and perhaps overlooking our gameplan, and if you do that you’re pretty much beating yourself before you’ve even started the game.

“We need some calm heads, and more importantly we need to enjoy the occasion.

“There’s a lot of young guys in our team who will be playing their first derby against Bridlington at home, and it’ll be key that they enjoy it and perform.”

Jones knows Brid are a dangerous proposition this season, but he believes if the home side’s key men turn up, then they are more than capable of beating their long-standing rivals.

“If we perform, we know we can beat anyone on our day,” said skipper Jones.

“Our key guys like Graham Hogg and Tom Harrison are experienced and they know what it’s like to play in big derby games, and then it’s up to myself, Nino Cutino and Billy Parker to get us into good positions to attack.

“We have some very dangerous players of our own and it’s up to us to get the likes of Matty Young, Loni Loni and Tom Ratcliffe the ball to get us on the scoreboard.”

Kick off is 2.15pm, with entry to the ground costing £5, Under-18s are free.
