HISTORIAN, conservationist and architectural enthusiast Tony Powell has named Ebberston Hall as his Yorkshire “hidden gem”.

Mr Powell, 64, who lives in Knaresborough, guides visitors at Rievaulx Abbey as his alter-ego Brother Anthony, a medieval monk.

He told the Yorkshire Post: “Ebberston Hall is a beautiful Palladian villa, built in 1718 for the then Scarborough MP William Thompson and his mistress. It’s just off the Pickering to Scarborough road and is reputedly the smallest house in that architectural style in Britain. It’s still very much lived in, and I think that it is beautiful.”
