THREE Scarborough artists are celebrating a decade since they graduated with a joint exhibition.

Sharon Winter, Janine Baldwin and Shirley Sheppard all graduated with honours from the BA degree in fine art in 2001 and the Ten Years On exhibition is on display at the Blandscliff Gallery in the Old Town.

Shirley said: “At university the lecturers said 10 years was a magic number; if one kept going, getting your work out there, despite setbacks and rejections, kept developing and learning then payoffs may follow.

“So these 10 years have indeed been dedicated to that and as I receive more and more invitations to open sculpture exhibitions I feel my value as an artist especially to me is receiving more positive emotions that help one to continue.”

Sharon added she had painted and exhibited continuously across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire since graduating. She said: “In the past I have run art clubs from an old rented warehouse, a local community centre and a shop. I work from my studio – it’s actually a shed in my back garden – and there’s no place that I’d rather be, but community work, as well as providing extra income provides relief from what can be quite a lonely occupation.”

Janine said: “In my 10 years as a professional artist I have learnt a great deal.

“I have learnt how to become a businesswoman alongside developing my own artistic voice in the world.”
