FINAL preparations are being put in place for Sir Elton John’s big show at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre this weekend.
A platform of 2,000 extra seats has been installed for Sunday’s event – on the theatre’s water feature.
The legendary singer-songwriter will take to the stage at the newly-expanded North Bay venue for one of the biggest musical extravaganzas the town has ever seen.
Cllr David Jeffels, who holds the cabinet portfolio for tourism on Scarborough Council, was among the first to book his place.
He said: “It’s the biggest entertainment name Scarborough has seen for many years. It sends a message to the entertainment world that Scarborough is now a key date for big-name artists.
“I’m certain that following Elton John, and Kiri Te Kanawa, we will be seeing more famous artistes coming to Scarborough.”
The concert sold out the 8,500 tickets.
Cllr Jeffels added: “This show is a big thing for people in Scarborough. With the re-opening of the Spa all the potential is there.
“People will travel and stay overnight for the likes of Sir Elton. Many will have a weekend break before taking in the show.”
Sunday’s performance is one of only two solo shows which Sir Elton is performing in the UK as part of his European tour. It is the first time in a career spanning almost five decades that he will have performed in Scarborough.
Fans of Sir Elton can expect more than two hours of hits from his incredible back catalogue, which includes classics such as Bennie and The Jets, Crocodile Rock and Your Song.
It was agreed this month that artistes will be able to perform until 11pm, an extension of an hour. Alcohol sales will be permitted for three extra hours, although bars must close by 10.30pm.
