Scarborough Spa Orchestra is set to entertain scores of people in the Grand Hall with its annual New Year’s Day concert A Viennese Whirl.
As always, the programme will be made up of well known Viennese pieces by the Strauss family and other composers who found fame and fortune in Vienna.
And it is in that city that the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will set the musical festivities rolling on January 1 with a morning concert which is beamed around the world.
The Strauss waltzes, marches and polkas have never been more popular, thanks to the amazing success of Andre Rieu and his orchestra.
He has reminded everybody what great tunes were written by Johann Strauss and his friends and family.
The other Viennese composer who everyone knows and loves is Franz Lehar. His musical show The Merry Widow is as popular as it ever was.
A selection of these tunes will be in the Spa concert as well as examples of Lehar’s other memorable waltzes such as Gold and Silver.
Nothing to do on New Year’s Day? The solution is simple. Join the tune-humming, toe-tapping, hand-clapping crowd at the Spa at 3pm.
Dominic Stokes of Scarborough Spa commented: “As in Vienna, the Spa Orchestra’s New Year’s Day Concert is now something of a tradition and is a great way to start 2014”.
