The much-awaited return to Scarborough Jazz of Matt Ball, a trombonist with the most impressive CV, takes place on Wednesday April 8.
Matt has played with many of the UK’s top vocalists and musicians including Clare Teal, Alan Barnes, Andy Prior, Dennis Rollins and Elbow.
As a session player he has worked with the Motown and Soul legends Ben E King, Percy Sledge and Martha Reeves.
Matt is also no stranger to the big band genre, having honed his skills with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before going on to play with the New Squadronaires, the Memphis Bell Orchestra and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra.
Matt’s festival credits include Manchester, Wigan, Southport and Scarborough. Amazingly he also finds time to teach and has gained a fine reputation as a composer.
Matt’s gig, which features Peter Elsdon on piano, is at the Cask, Scarborough, and begins at 8.45 pm.
Admission is £4.
Sax playAl Wood is the guest of the club at the Cask on Wednesday April 15, Rev Ray, Jenny Bray and Students on April 22 and the Heavy Horns on April 29.
This year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival will be held at the Spa.
It runs from Friday September 25 to Sunday September 27. Guests include Zoe Gilby and Ian Shaw. From the US come Jean Toussaint (ex Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans, Horace Silver) and Darius Brubeck.
