Organisers are hoping that this year’s Seafest will be bigger and better than ever – with a places in a yacht race up for grabs in a competition
The festival was officially launched on the West Pier on Friday and is due to take place on the weekend of Friday, July 20, until Sunday, July 22.
The race will be staged by Scarborough Yacht Club during the event – and two places on the Commodore’s boat available to winners.
The race will be on Saturday, July 21, and has been organised as part of National Push The Boat Out Day – a Royal Yachting Association initiative aimed at getting as many boats as possible out on the water.
Janet Deacon. Welcome to Yorkshire’s area director, said: “We’re delighted that Scarborough Yacht Club is involved in this year’s Seafest – this race ties in perfectly with Seafest and the chance to sail with the Commodore is a prize well worth winning.”
She added that, while the festival had kept its strong links with Scarborough’s maritime heritage and the sea, it had moved in a more mainstream direction. She said: “We are absolutely delighted to have The Great Yorkshire Brewery and the team behind Acoustic Gathering on board. They have terrific expertise and I’m confident we are set for another great Seafest.”
Phil Lee from The Great Yorkshire Brewery said: “We’ve had a long association with Seafest and I’m delighted we have the opportunity to help grow this event. As well as around 40 guest ales and six ciders, this will be the first time the new cask range from The Great Yorkshire Brewery will be seen together.”
Exact start times for the race are calculated on a boat’s individual handicap, which means that although boats may be starting the race at different times, they should finish at around the same time, providing a thrilling climax as the different boats converge on the finishing line, just off the outer harbour wall.
The Seafest pursuit race starts from 4.30pm with – weather permitting – many Scarborough crews expected to take part. It coincides with the second day of Seafest.
To win a trip for two sailing with the commodore in the Seafest race, entrants are asked to answer the following: What is the name of the place in Holland where yachts finish the North Sea Yacht Race? Text your answer to 07967 465377 before noon on Saturday, July 21, along with the names and ages of the two people who would be sailing and confirmation of their ability to swim.
