Saxophonist Toby Greenwood is the guest performer at Scarborough Jazz at The Cask on Wednesday September 10.
He made a successful appearance at Scarborough Jazz with his band We Free Kings last year. This time he will be backed by The Mike Gordon Trio.
The son of a multi-instrumentalist, Toby has been a professional saxophonist since the age of 16 and although reared on jazz he has, until recently made his living principally within the funk, R’n’B and session scene.
Having worked in bands of just about every size and permutation you can think of, he makes particular use of this invaluable experience when arranging for We Free Kings, exploiting the different blends and tonal possibilities available.
Toby has contributed material to many of the groups he has worked with and enjoys the opportunity to explore and develop a compositional style that has been praised for it’s maturity and described as evocative and ‘visual’.
His music displays influences from Latin American and South African jazz, with echoes of Monk and Mingus. Toby says his sax playing influences “are the usual tenor ones really, but particularly Wayne Shorter, and lately I’ve rediscovered early Sonny Rollins”.
The gig starts at 8.45pm and the entry fee is £4.
