A Salute to the 1940s at Scarborough YMCA includes Vera Lynn tribute

If your walking anywhere near the YMCA Theatre in Scarborough on Sunday and you hear the air raid sirens followed by the air raid warden shouting '˜Put that light out', don't panic Mr Mainwaring.

It’s just Groovy Gazza Productions and their award winning show A Salute to the 1940s.

One its performers Lorrie Brown has been performing a tribute to Dame Vera Lynn for 21 years.
INn 2013, Lorrie won a national award as the UK No1 Vera Lynn tribute.

Dame Vera heard about the award and invited Lorrie to her home to meet her. Lorrie said: “After months of planning, myself and Gary Birtles went to meet her in her home and spent three hours chatting to her and her daughter Virginia.

    “We talked about her time entertaining the troops all around the world and especially her time in Burma where she sang in the same harsh conditions that the troops had to live in.


    “ We presented her with a book of messages from her many fans.
There were a lot of very touching messages and she was overwhelmed by them.”

    In her time as a tribute artiste Lorrie has played in many different venues. Lorrie said: “The performances that really stand out are performing on the pitch at half time during a game between West Ham and Everton on Remembrance Sunday.

    “It was amazing singing to 33,000 people and hearing them all join in with We’ll Meet Again, Another highlight was spending two hours touring with the Danny La Rue. He was an incredible person and even at the age of 80, as soon as he walked onto the stage, he would just fill the auditorium with his presence.”

    A Salute to the 1940s features some of the greats from the 1940. Performing alongside Lorrie’s Vera Lynn tribute, will be tributes to George Formby, the Andrews Sisters, Gracie Fields, Frank Sinatra who will sing a few of the big band classics made famous by Glenn Miller and his orchestra.

    Gary will be keeping everyone in line as the Air Raid Warden. The show will also pay tribute to the acts from World War One featuring Marie Lloyd and Harry Lauder
