Film critic Barry Norman and his daughter Samantha got the Books by the Beach event in Scarborough off to an entertaining start today.

They were the first two guests of the literature festival which runs until Sunday April 19.

Barry, who presented a film review programme, talked about his book about the death of his wife Diane and Samantha talked about what it was liek finishing her mother’s 12th century novel Winter Siege.

Diane wrote crime fiction under the name of Ariana Franklin, although Winter Siege was a stand-alone novel.
