A play directed by Sir Jonathan Miller will be staged at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, later this year.
Sir Jonathan, who has directed opera on some of the grandest stages in the world, is a TV broadcaster of ferocious intellect, an author and critic. He was asked to take on the project for Northern Broadsides.
The company’s artistic director Barrie Rutter, who worked with Sir Jonathan at the RSC, showed him Rutherford and Son and asked him to direct it.
“I was struck by its brilliance,” said Sir Jonathan.
“The play is intensely funny – the nature of comedy lies in repeating aspects of human activity that we had forgotten and being reminded of them,” he said.
Northern Broadsides, regular visitors to the Stephen Joseph Theatre, bring Rutherford and Son to the venue for a week from Tuesday April 23 to Saturday April 27.
