It will likely be a cold, wet and miserable November day when Rhod Gilbert comes to Scarborough - and that’s just the way he likes it.
In the penultimate month of a UK tour that clocks up more than 100 dates, the top Welsh comic looks to bring audiences closer together by sharing in the laughter when he performs at the Spa’s Grand Hall.
“It’s a good time to be touring,” he said. “Comedy works best when the nights are drawing in, when you’re cold, wet and miserable, not when you’re in T-shirt and shorts.”
A natural joker, the former market researcher only got into the comedy profession at the age of 32, after much ‘nagging’ by his then girlfriend.
In the 12 years following, he’s become popular for his stand-up rants on life’s minor irritations, but we’ve been told to expect a more toned down Rhod at the local leg of The Man with the Flaming Battenburg Tattoo tour on Tuesday, November 13 .
“There’s still plenty of ranting and raving but there’s more light and shade and calm bits - it’s a slightly mellower me,” said Rhod. “It’s down to what’s happening in my life, I’m happy where I am at the moment.”
Audiences can gain an insight into this change in character, although Rhod adds: “You’ve got to take the details with a pinch of salt, it’s 100 per cent truth and 100 per cent lies.”
Tickets are available from the Spa box office on (01723) 357869.
