Two more guests have been added to the Sci-Fi Scarborough programme for next year.
They are Dan Starkey who plays the Sontaran Strax in Dr Who and Garrett Wang, better known as Ensign Harry Kim in the US TV Series Star Trek: Voyager.
“It really is an obvious fit for us to get another great character from a seminal TV series. We have always had a strong Doctor Who presence here and every guest we have hosted has been absolutely brilliant with the fans,” said co-organiser Steve Dickinson.
Dan is best known to Doctor Who fans as Strax, but also plays the majority of the Sontaran race on screen and on audio for Big Finish Productions. In 2014 he was rewarded for nearly seven years of work in a rubber mask by being allowed to play Ian the surly elf with his actual face in the episode Last Christmas opposite Nick Frost’s Santa Claus.
He has co-hosted the BBC Doctor Who Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, and given his voice to numerous Doctor Who computer games. Also made by BBC Wales Cymru, Dan has played hobgoblin Randal Moon in three series of Wizards vs Aliens, created by Phil Ford and Russell T Davies. He appeared in the final story of The Sarah Jane Adventures as Plark the light sculptor. He also appeared in series two of Inside No.9.
Dan has worked extensively on stage, in roles from Shakespeare to Dostoyevsky and as an evil reindeer in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. He has also been a company member and occasional writer of the mighty Fitzrovia Radio Hour since 2009. He’s a frequent improviser and has made stuff up with such companies as the London 50-Hour Improvathon, Grand Theft Impro and The Beau Zeaux. He’s also done lots of radio plays, and has just started writing for Big Finish Productions.
Born in Riverside, California to Chinese immigrant parents, Garrett’s first onscreen performance was in the television series All-American Girl.
“To say we are pleased is a major understatement. Star Trek in all its incarnations is such a cultural
touchstone for all fans of science fiction and the fact we have managed to get such a major actor from one of them is just really, really great news. The bar continues to be raised and we could not be happier for the event, the town and the convention attendees.” said Steve.
The event is at the Spa on April 9 and 10.
