Rehearsals get under way for Brassed Off

Rehearsals are well under way for a new production of Brassed Off with John McArdle in the lead role of Danny at York Theatre Royal.

He is joined by Andy Dunn, of Dinnerladies and Corrie fame, as Phil and Clara Darcy as Gloria, the female surveyor who returns to her home town to conduct a feasibility study on the mine.

Directed by York Theatre Royal’s artistic director Damian Cruden, adapted by Paul Allen and based on the film of the same name by York writer-director Mark Herman, this production coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984.

It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seems like a distant dream.
