Plans were approved on Thursday by Scarborough Council’s planning committee for the floodlit sand court on land between Hairy Bob’s Skate Park and Royal Albert Cafe on Royal Albert Drive.

It also includes a changing area and spectator seating and gained the unanimous approval of the committee.

The report wich went before the committee stated: “The beach court will be dug out and will consist of 2ft of gravel below 1ft of sand, incorporating a drainage system. There will be tiered timber decking, bitmac entrance path and 4m high welded mesh fencing, galvanised colour coated green surrounding the decking and court.

“The changing facilities will be timber buildings with bitumen roofs.

“The facilities will be painted in traditional beach hut colours

“It is considered that the proposed beach volleyball court is an acceptable scheme in this location and would positively contribute to the existing sporting facilities on offer within the town.”

Sport England also backed the scheme as it will bring a new sport to Scarborough.
