Residents have been queuing at Deans Garden Centre, Seamer Road, Irton Garden Centre and Burniston Garden Centre, Coastal Road, to buy plants, hanging baskets, compost, lawn feed and other items.

The centres opened their doors on Wednesday as the Government eased the lockdown rules brought in to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Horticultural Trades Association had been lobbying the Government for weeks and successfully argued that the open spaces meant transmitting coronavirus was less likely and it was easier to maintain social distancing.

Centres across the country have brought in social distancing and other safety measures.

Opening hours:

Dean Road Garden Centre is open from Mondays to Sundays from 9am to 5pm.

Irton Garden Centre is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm

Burniston Garden Centre is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
