The “Eat Out to Help Out” scheme aims to help protect jobs in the hospitality industry and encourage people to safely return to dining out by offering them a discount.

Restaurants, bars, cafes and other establishments who use the scheme will offer a 50% reduction, up to a maximum of £10 per person, to all diners who eat and/or drink-in, every Monday to Wednesday, between August 3 and 31.

The scheme does not cover alcohol.

Scarborough Council is urging businesses in the borough to register to be part of Eat Out to Help Out. Once registered, they will receive a window sticker to show they are taking part in the scheme and can download promotional items from www.gov.uk.

A link to online information about Eat Out to Help Out can be found in the support for businesses section at scarborough.gov.uk/coronavirus. The scheme does not apply to takeaways.

The council’s tourism team will compile a list of businesses that take part in Eat Out to Help Out, which will be promoted on the Discover Yorkshire Coast website.

Cllr Liz Colling, Scarborough Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for Inclusive Growth, said: “Our borough’s hospitality businesses, like the rest of the industry throughout the country, has been severely affected by many weeks of lockdown closures.

“They are now having to adapt to social distancing guidelines, which drastically reduces the number of people they can serve at any one time.

“I welcome this latest measure to help get people through the doors of businesses and kick start customer spending. I encourage businesses who feel the scheme is a good fit for them to register in plenty of time so they can be ready to offer the discount from 3 August.

“I’ve made a personal pledge to eat out at a different restaurant or café each week and if I visit on a day when the discount applies, I will donate the refund to a local food bank so that I can do my bit to help those most in need.

“Price might not be the deciding factor for everyone in choosing whether or not to dine out, but for people who feel confident enough and are able, please Eat Out to Help Out your local businesses during these challenging times.”
