Scarborough chippy wins BBC Best of British Takeaways

A Scarborough chippy has won a TV contest to be crowned Britain's best takeaway.

Papas Fish and Chips, which has a restaurant in Eastfield, was one of three fish and chip shops in the country to take part in BBC Two's Britain's Best Takeaways.

Last night's episode saw chef's take part in a cooking contest against Hook, in Camden, and Krispies, in Devon, to win the title.

The show began with chef and co-presenter Tom Kerridge travelling to the Papas restaurant in Willerby, near Hull, to meet owners Dino, George and Sid Papas to give him an insight into how they make their award-winning food.

Kerridge said: "I've just spent a couple of hours witnessing one of the most incredible food services I've ever seen. The standard is so incredibly high."

The chefs took part in various challenges, with Papas winning the quick-fire speed round, where they had to sell their products from a stall.

They also took part in a fish knowledge quiz before impressing in the innovation cooking round, which saw them take first place.

Sid became emotional following the results, saying: "I'm so proud of them (George and Dino). I'm so proud. I can't put it into words. It's not easy for me to cry, but today I cry."

Papas told The Scarborough News before the show that they plan to host a free fish and chips day if they won.
