Businesses and individuals have been keen to pledge their support for the Scarborough Coronavirus Appeal, helping cash-strapped charities support local people during the coronavirus crisis.

Among those giving to the campaign, managed by Two Ridings Community Foundation, is Eastfield-based clothing firm SikSilk.

Owners Sam Kay, Baz Gill and Dave Thompson said: “By donating to we know we are helping local charities that are likely to be hit hardest by the current situation. “Two Ridings Community Foundation are doing amazing work ensuring people in Scarborough are kept safe, fed, well and connected during the coronavirus lockdown.

Money from the fund is already being handed out to charities across the borough.

A spokesperson for older people’s charity Trinity Centre Whitby, which is among those to benefit so far, said: “Our clients experience the debilitating effects of social isolation under normal circumstances.

“This grant will enable us to stay in regular contact with them over the next three months and to provide hot meals several times per week to those who need it most.

“The Trinity Centre struggles under normal circumstances, being highly dependent on volunteers, fundraising and donations. Without grants such as this, the Trinity Centre would have closed and the social connectedness so important to our clients would be lost to them.

“This is the same for small charities across the region, whose clients are dependent on them for the types of support that keeps them going personally as well as practically.

“The Trinity Centre would like say a big thank you to all individuals and businesses, large and small, that have contributed towards making grants such as we have received possible.”

Other groups to benefit already include Scarbrough and Ryedale Carers Resource; Whitby, Scarborough and Ryedale Disability Action group; and Whitby Hidden Impairments Support and Help.
