Optomap – a digital eye image

Loftus & Skelton Optical in East Cleveland can now offer patients access to the optomap as part of a comprehensive eye exam.

An optomap is a 200 degree digital image of the inside of the eye. This fast, easy, painless device allows the optician to easily see most of the retina in a single image. This unmatched technology is revolutionizing eye care.

“I am extremely pleased to offer this technology to my patients,” said optician and owner John Prouse. “Whether I am treating a returning patient, seeing a referral, or providing a healthy eye exam, it is important for me to examine the entire retina. The optomap enhances my retinal exam and provides a permanent digital image which I can examine at length, magnify, and refer to on subsequent visits.”

Imaging with optomap can help opticians identify hard to see abnormalities and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

It takes less than half a second to capture an optomap. The process is quick, easy, and painless, and the images may enhance clinical care, patient satisfaction, and practice efficiency.

And as well as improving eye care, optomap images can provide and an early indication of other health conditions enabling Opticians to determine the best course of action.

Why is it needed?

Early detection of retinal disease may permit earlier and safer treatments and even prevent vision loss. An optomap should be performed annually regardless of symptoms, so that opticians can observe changes occurring as patients age and look for subtle signs of diseases progression.

Millions of optomap images have been conducted worldwide, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of serious eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular degeneration, and other pathologies like melanomas.
