They asked local people to nominate key workers and others they thought deserved a special thank you for their hard work and for going above and beyond for their local community, with more than 120 nominations received.

A draw was held last Friday, and 25 names were drawn from the nominations.

The initiative came about following a donation from local resident Lizzie Elwick, and David Creek of Delta Charlie Drones Photography, after David had raffled off one of his prints to raise money for a good cause.

Owner of Hetty & Betty, Lois Mee, said: “As we had provided free meals for children during the October half term following the Government’s decision to withdraw food vouchers from children who receive free school meals, they decided to give the money to Hetty & Betty as a donation towards the free children’s meals.

“However, as we had already donated the free children’s meals, we decided to match the donation, and use the money instead to provide 25 free afternoon tea deliveries to key workers in Whitby.”

The people that were drawn out were all key workers and residents of Whitby, including a number of care home staff members, a number of carers, a funeral directors staff member, a local postman, a headteacher, a class teacher, a staff member working for a telephone helpline for disabled and vulnerable people, a doctors surgery staff member, a nurse, a safeguarding nurse, a supermarket manager, a supermarket shop assistant.

Lois added: “All of the those drawn have gone above and beyond in their jobs and for their local community.

"Despite 2020 being a tumultuous year for everyone, and especially difficult in hospitality, we wanted to show our local key workers that they are appreciated and are valued by everyone in the town.

“And with more than 120 nominations, I think the town really showed its appreciation.”

Hetty & Betty, on Baxtergate, is back open tomorrow (Wed).
