Through 2024 over 40,000 visitors to the Centre were captivated by its marine exhibits. The summer saw an expansion in resident species too, so now over 30 different native marine life are viewable across five interactive tanks. From delicate sea anemones to the charismatic lobsters, each exhibit provides an up-close look at the incredible biodiversity of the North Sea. The addition of new interpretation panels and identification graphics has improved the educational experience.
Inspiring visitors in order to foster a greater sense of conservation and guardianship of our our native marine biodiversity.
Education lies at the heart of the Whitby Marine Discovery Centre’s mission - offering educational visits, inspiring children and adults alike to care deeply about marine conservation. Thanks to a generous £99,495 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Centre launched a series of innovative engagement initiatives, including workshops, guided tours, and hands-on activities. These programs have been met with resounding enthusiasm from schools, community groups, and families.

One of the Centre’s proudest achievements this year was its connection with schools both locally and from across the country. Over 1000 pupils from different school groups have walked through the visitors centre doors and been inspired and educated on the wonders of the UKs native marine life. The Centre's mission is that people young and old will leave with a better understanding of our oceans, fostering a greater sense of guardianship that will ensure healthy oceans for future generations.
The Centre’s achievements in 2024 would not have been possible without the unwavering support of its community and industry partners. Collaborations with offshore wind farm projects and local businesses provided essential funding, enabling the Centre to expand its programs and enhance its facilities. This collective effort underscores the shared commitment to preserving the region’s marine heritage.
Feedback from visitors continues to be positive and one guest shared, “It’s amazing to see the life cycle of lobsters up close and learn about the incredible conservation work being done. It’s not just an attraction—it’s a cause worth supporting.”
