Students at Scarborough's UTC look forward to next steps on results day

Principal Lee Kilgour said the students graduate with the highest level of technical and employability skills and “are real advocates of the unique approach of the UTC”.

Among their destination highlights are the universities of Bristol, Birmingham, Hull and Warwick – as well as GCHQ, the Royal Navy and the RAF.

Eighteen-year-old Hana Hinton, who made a significant contribution to the UTC’s F1 in Schools success in Abu Dhabi last November, will undertake a fully-funded engineering degree with Warwick University while working for Dyson, the household technology innovators.

Hana has earned a unique double at the UTC by not only joining the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology academy which trains the next generation of engineers, but she is also part of the international prestigious F1 Unilever Williams Engineering Academy. She was the only UK female entrant from 500 students to have been selected by Williams.

Other students have also secured major leaps on the college’s results day.

Nathan Golby will study Nuclear Engineering at the University of Birmingham, Alex Hill will study English at the University of Bristol, Inayah Islam will study engineering at Queen Mary’s University London and Elliot White and Will Reid Frow will read computer science at the University of Hull, the UTC partner university.

Other successes include a student who will join GCHQ, and Harry Relph and Zach Stinson will embark on military careers with apprenticeships in the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.

Mr Kilgour said: “I am very proud of the hard work the Sixth Form students have put into their studies. For some students in this cohort, this is a culmination of just four years at the UTC, having joined us in year 10 at age 14.

“They and our staff have coped remarkably well in these unprecedented and challenging circumstances.”

The UTC, which seeks to help meet the national shortage of engineers, technicians and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students, is also available to students who want to study general subjects or seek apprenticeships. It works with the area’s leading employers.

The college fully re-opens on September 7 for all age groups and applications can be made through its website.

The college was also pleased to have manufactured a large supply of protective visors and safety glasses for hospitals and health care groups in Scarborough at the height of the Covid-19 crisis.

The National Careers Service has an exam results helpline 8am to 10pm until August 28 on 0800 100 900 to speak to careers advisers.
