Priti Patel has said people who continue to flout coronavirus lockdown rules will be breaking the law and can be arrested.

The Home Secretary said: "The Prime Minister has been clear on what we need to do: stay at home to protect our NHS and save lives. "All our frontline services really are the best of us and are doing an incredible job to stop this terrible virus from spreading.

"That's why I'm giving the police these new enforcement powers, to protect the public and keep people safe."

Experts are suggesting that the economic shock caused by coronavirus could to plunge the UK into a steeper recession than that of the financial crisis.

Economists are predicting double-digit declines in gross domestic product (GDP) that would dwarf the 6% decline seen between 2008-2009.

Samuel Tombs, at Pantheon Macroeconomics, is predicting a shortfall in GDP of between 15% and 20% in the weeks during the lockdown.

Rishi Sunak has aid that preparing help for the self-emplyed is "incredibly complicated".

Over 15% of the UK's workforce is self-employed.

He says: "We are taking unprecedented action to increase NHS capacity by increasing the number of beds, key staf and life-saving equipment on the front line. 

That is why people must "stay at home".

The Chancellor implores people to log on to businesssuport.gov.uk before making any decisions on the future of employees.

"You have not been forgotten, we will not leave you behind, we all stand together. "

The government will pay 80% of self-employments wages taking their average monthly profits over the last three years. This will be capped up to £2500 a month for three months.

He says he will extend it for longer if necessary. 

This will be open to anyone with profits up to £50,000. 

The scheme will only open to  those who filed a tax return last year. 

The scheme will be up and running by June and will cover 95% of the self-employed.
