First death from coronavirus in York Teaching NHS Foundation Trust hospital

The first death from coronavirus has been recorded at a York Teaching NHS Foundation Trust hospital.

The Trust's hospitals include York Hospital, Scarborough Hospital, Bridlington Hospital, Malton Hospital, The New Selby War Memorial Hospital, St Monica's Hospital Easingwold, White Cross Rehabilitation Hospital and St Helens Rehabilitation Hospital.

A spokesperson for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the news, saying: "Sadly, we can confirm that a patient being cared for at York Hospital who had tested positive for COVID-19 has died. Our thoughts and condolences are with their family at this difficult and distressing time."

It comes after the county saw its first death from the virus last Tuesday (March 17), an elderly patient with other significant underlying health conditions who was being treated at Harrogate hospital.

Yesterday it was confirmed that a second person being cared for in Harrogate had died after testing positive for coronavirus.

As of 9.00am on Tuesday (March 24), there are 8,077 confirmed cases in the UK, and there have been 422 deaths.
