Speaking at a briefing from the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum, Superintendent Mike Walker said the force has not yet fined anyone for not wearing a face covering.

"While we realised we have a role to play, we will be working with the community and as a last resort using enforcement," he said.

"This does put an additional pressure on us at a time when local demand has returned to pre-Covid-19 levels.

"Everyone has a part to play. By adhering to the rules - as the vast majority have been doing - that is what we are expecting.

"We will do our best to protect the public of North Yorkshire and beat the virus."

The NHS website instructs people to self-isolate if you have any symptoms of coronavirus or have tested positive for the disease.

You must also self-isolate if you live with someone who has symptoms or tested positive, someone in your support bubble has symptoms or tested positive, you're told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace or the NHS COVID-19 app, or you arrive in the UK from a country with a high coronavirus risk.
