Music: Don't miss these two great musicians

Award-winning songwriter and singer Charlie Dore is returning to Scarborough and teaming up with co-pilot multi-instrumentalist Julian Littman, of Steeleye Span, to perform material from her latest album, Dark Matter.

In this fast moving evening of eclectic, contemporary folk, the pair, who have been playing together since they were 16, will fill the Market Hall with the sound of guitars, mandolin, harmonium, ukulele, piano and autoharp as they raid the instrument cupboard and swap instruments, keeping the sound engineer on their toes and the audience entertained with plenty of stories and banter.

Although its title might suggest a leap into astro-physics, Dark Matter is actually more about the parallels between big, eternal themes and small, ordinary dramas, where humans are routinely baffled by their own, inner space. Charlie says “I was fascinated to learn that while Dark Matter makes up 85 per cent of the universe, even scientists don’t know what it’s actually made up of.

Eddie Lawlor – Woodend, The Crescent, Scarborough, Wednesday May 16 at 1pm

Writer and performer Eddie Lawler, whose portfolio includes six albums of original songs, poetry collections, plays and musicals, moved from Saltaire to Scarborough.

Frequently referred to in West Yorkshire as “Bard of Saltaire”, he is now dipping his toes into coastal waters.

He has popped up at Filey and Robin Hood’s Bay Folk Clubs, and makes his Scarborough debut at Woodend with his musical tribute to the Brontë family.

Entitled Tracking the Brontës this one-hour whistle-stop tour follows the family’s train journeys (one of which ends in Scarborough) in narrative and original song, and celebrates the 200th birthdays of the four siblings.

It has toured West Yorkshire over the past two years to acclaim. Audience feedback includes: “found the idea captivating, the story engaging and absorbing”.

Eddie has appeared on Look North with songs about Harry Ramsden and Bradford City, and has been a contributor to programmes on BBC Radio Leeds.
