Pictured before 1879 is a view of Scarborough Harbour with the old West Pier in the centre foreground.
Although West Pier was widened and lengthened between 1879 and 1882, Scarborough was still at a disadvantaged with the great ports of Grimsby, Hull, Shields and Aberdeen because of insufficient harbour space and repair facilities.
