GIRLS, there’s still time to enter this year’s Miss Scarborough competition – but you’ll need to hurry!
If you think you can see yourself as the town’s next female ambassador, and think you can impress the judges in the prestigious Miss England grand final, don’t miss this last opportunity to join the 2012 Miss Scarborough and District line-up.
The competition is open to young women, aged 17-24, who live in the area and have a YO postcode, and can include local university and college students.
As well as winning a host of prizes and representing the region at functions and events over the year, the winner will gain automatic entry into the glamourous Miss England final taking place at the Athena in Leicester on June 25 and 26, while one other finalist will go through to the national semi-final.
Leanne Wilford, 19, of Malton, who currently holds the title, will be passing on her crown at a glittering ceremony taking place at Scarborough Fair Collection Ballroom at the Flower of May, Lebberston, on April 21.
She said: “It’s been an amazing year, and I’d definitely encourage other girls to go for it.
“You never know how far you’re going to get, but even if I hadn’t have won, it would still have been worth it.
“It’s about gaining friendships, the experience and it’s a massive confidence boost.”
So if you think you could be a worthy successor, now is your chance to get involved.
Enter now and you could be joining the following entrants in the Miss Scarborough grand final.
They are: Abbie Johnson, 21, of Broom Walk, an English Literature and Culture student at Hull University, Scarborough Campus; Scarborough Sixth Form College student Bethany Hedgecock, 17, of Beacon Road; Shaye Jordan, 17, of Gordon Street; hairdresser Zoe Henderson, 18, of Market Weighton; Ladbrokes cashier Stephanie Atha, 21, of Malton; steward Lauren Simmons, 17, of Thirsk; Headlands College students Jo-Ann Clark, 17, and older sister Sarah, 19, both from Filey; University of Hull, Scarborough Campus Environmental Science student Eleanor Hardie, 19; Yorkshire Coast College beauty therapy student Beth Carpenter, 18, of Normanby; Jade Sorbie, 20, from Rawcliffe, and Alice Taylor, 18, a housekeeper at Skipsea Sands.
Regional competition organiser Diane Yalezo hopes more girls will come forward to join this experience where entrants will be treated “like a princess for the day.”
She said: “Because the final is not until April 21, we’ve decided to keep the competition open longer, until March 24.
“Anyone still interested in entering can join the girls going through to the Miss Scarborough grand final.
“We are lucky to see the return of Lisa Powell, official choreographer for Miss England, who will work with you all day to show you exactly what to do on the night.
“Shadow of Victoria Road, Scarborough, will be on hand to do your hair and Spa.ngle will do your make-up.
“If you want to join in what is going to be an unforgettable night, enter today.”
The deadline for entries has now been extended until Saturday March 24.
Mrs Yalezo has also encouraged more local girls to do the town proud.
She added: “So far we’ve had a lot of interest from entrants living outside of Scarborough, but it would be nice to see some more girls from the area going into the final too.
“There’s the chance to win some fantastic prizes on the night, and we hope the winner can put Scarborough on the map by bringing home the title of Miss England.”
