The last 18 months have seen many of us welcome a new four-legged friend into our homes, as the Kennel Club saw dog ownership rise by nearly eight per cent over 2020.
But with 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, there’s plenty of thinking to do before you select your perfect pup.
Here are 12 of the most popular breeds of dog that love the water and seaside, according to the American Kennel Club.
5. Lagotto Romagnolo
Originally used as a gundog to hunt waterfowl, they are excellent swimmers and are today used to hunt truffles. They are believed to the original breed from which all water dogs are descended.

The Newfoundland was originally bred as a water rescue dog, has a large lung capacity and can swim long distances. Now they just love to enjoy the water.

7. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
A medium-size dog and one of the smallest the retrievers. They are intelligent and were bred to lure waterfowl and then retrieve the dead birds from the water.

Originally bred to hunt on land and water, the Flat-Coat is better known today as a energetic and water-loving dog.
