Turning back clock for new inn name

THE owners of a long-established Hunmanby pub will be taking a trip down memory lane when they re-christen The Buck Inn in Bridlington Street as The Southgate Bed and Breakfast following a competition to find a new name.

The landlord of The Cottage, Dave Wells, who is acting as an agent for the owners, said he received around 50 entries from locals, boasting a wide range of suggestions.

He said The Southgate was chosen because it specifically reflected the locality and its history. Southgate was the old name for Bridlington Street.

Winner Tony Aspinall, of Sheepdyke Lane, was the only person to choose the name, and he received a prize of £50 plus an invitation to the opening night of the bed-and-breakfast, which is expected to be some time next month.

The pub was sold by Enterprise Inns last year as the company sought to offload a large number of its less successful businesses throughout the UK.

Work is now nearing completion on the conversion of the interior of the premises, which will boast seven bedrooms, a restaurant and staff accommodation.

Bookings are now being taken through The Cottage pub in Cross Hill.
