Villages vying for floral supremacy

TWO neighbouring villages are challenging each other for the title of Best Large Village in Yorkshire 2011.

Cayton and Osgodby are going head to head in the bid for floral glory after finding themselves in the same category in the Yorkshire in Bloom contest.

Both villages were visited by judges Steve Bumby and Joe Lee, both from Leeds, last week.

The judges will return in July for a summer inspection before the entrants learn their fate when the results are announced in mid-September.

The groups are always looking for new volunteers an would welcome anyone who can spend an hour or two to help keep the villages looking their best. Potential volunteers do not have to be expert gardeners.

Roger Burnett, Scarborough Council’s community environment officer, said: “It is important to stress that Bloom volunteers do not spend a great deal of time in meetings and anyone who can give just an hour or two would be welcomed with open arms.”
