In May 2016, North Yorkshire County Council's planning committee approved an application for Third Energy to undertake fracking for shale gas at Kirby Misperton, near Pickering.

It provoked a storm ... and led to the tiny village becoming central in the nationwide battle against fracking, with protesters carrying out ever-extreme measures to highlight their cause and try to prevent operations. The protesters' camp has long since been dismantled, as has the energy company's equipment ... and now Third Energy has dropped its plans completely.
