Pupils, students and youth groups from throughout the Scarborough area are being invited to take part in a mini boat-building competition – with free kits.
The aim is to work in small teams to design and construct a boat that can complete a 15- metre course.
Each boat will be timed against the clock with the fastest time across the age groups from seven to19.
Free basic kits to power the boat will be provided to each team, who can make their design stand out.
The ‘P1 to Schools Build a Boat Challenge’ has been developed in association with P1 Superstock powerboat racer David Taft. It is funded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
The event will run as part of Scarborough Engineering Week and Engineering Week takes place October 11-13 at the Scarborough Spa to show young people how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are so important in the real world. The week is organised by Scarborough Business Ambassadors, co-ordinated by North Yorkshire business Enterprise Partnership (NYBEP) and receives support and sponsorship from York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, the county council, Sirius Minerals which is the headline sponsor, plus the SIV Spa venue sponsor and event host, and HSBC, dinner sponsor, and Scarborough Borough Council.
The boat challenge is open to families and students aged 7-19 working in teams of no more than six, to be completed in college, youth groups or at home – with the finale taking place during Engineering Week.
Prizes will also be awarded to best design and best presentation of learning. Kits will be provided on a first-come basis. The challenge is split into these age groups, and further information will be provided on registration:

Teams/individuals will be expected to develop, design and build a boat in school or outside and provide a short presentation that will convince the judges of their learning and understanding of the challenge.
Families will be invited to attend one of the evening sessions of the event.
Judges will be looking for Best Design, Fastest Time, Best Build of boat, Best presentation on the learning achieved through this challenge.
