From big bands to rising stars, this year’s event is an impressive, balanced and entertaining line-up with some key players in the jazz world including Gareth Williams, Trish Clowes, Steve Waterman and Mark Nightingale.

For the fans of big bands, the festival welcomes the Abstract Truth Big Band, a labour of love for saxophonists Dave and Judith O’Higgins. The SK2 Jazz Orchestra will also make an appearance, an 18-piece performing exclusively music originally played by the Stan Kenton Band.

Rhythmic variations come from Vula Viel, harmonica player Adam Glasser and Pan Jumby are also set to wow audiences with Caribbean rhythms, Rumba and Cha Cha via the Steel Pan, reeds and flute.

Again, the festival brings vocalists to the coast and this year features the tones of Liane Carroll, Georgia Mancio, Nicola Farnon and Vimala Rowe, star of last year’s much-loved performance of Café Society.

The programme is also packed full of swinging modern jazz which is sure to entertain, especially when Gareth Williams and Trish Clowes play the Friday evening.

Gareth has unquestionably established himself as one of the country’s leading modern jazz pianists and has a great musical relationship with saxophonist Trish.

The ew project Waterman/Nightingale/Barnes play Henry Mancini is equally as exciting when they close the Saturday evening. Expect a fresh approach to some classic Mancini tunes including Pink Panther and Days of Wine and Roses.

It wouldn’t be Scarborough Jazz Festival without the legendary Alan Barnes. Renowned for his off-the-cuff sharp wit on the microphone, he returns as compere for his 13th consecutive year. The multi-award winning performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist will play in two separate projects throughout the weekend.

Director for Scarborough Jazz Festival Mike Gordon said “After the incredible complimentary evaluations we received for the 2015 festival I knew it was going to be a tough challenge to do better this year. But I think we might have done it with an impressive, balanced, entertaining line-up.”

The jazz festival runs from Friday September 23 to Sunday Septembe 25.

Earlybird weekend tickets are now on sale priced at £85 until 31 May, £90 from 1 June. Tickets are available from The Spa’s Box Office 01723 821888.
