The works is located at the end of Main Street in Irton and treats water from an onsite borehole which is nearly as deep as the Blackpool tower is high (130m).

Irton works is in need of modernisation to ensure water treated there continues to exceed stringent water quality standards. Large parts of the works will be replaced and new processes, including a pesticide removal plant, will be installed to enable the site to meet the needs of future generations.

Over the next three months the site will be prepared for the construction phase. Yorkshire Water’s contractors, Eric Wright, will carry out some modifications to existing pipework and demolish some of the existing buildings to clear an area of the site for the new process buildings.

Yorkshire Water Project Manager Jane Armstrong said, “The investment at Irton will ensure we can continue to supply the best possible drinking water to our customers. We will try to keep the impact of the project to a minimum; however, residents living nearby may notice an increase in site traffic. We will continue to communicate with the local community before we start the construction phase later this year.”
