A Rothschild giraffe has been born at Flamingo Land near Malton. The calf, a female, was born on March 22 to parents George, eight, and Lizzy, five. This takes the park’s herd to a total of seven. Rothschild giraffes are listed as endangered and their population is still decreasing. The new addition will be named shortly with the help of a Name the Baby competition and will go outside for the first time later this week.
The Rothschild giraffe herd at Flamingo Land was formed six years ago with the arrival of George and two females, and to date they have had four calves. This calf has one full sibling, a female called Pixie that was born on March 12, 2013. The calf also has two half brothers, born to the same father - Rufus who was born in 2011 and Brad who was born in January 2013.
