Ban for driver who used vacuum to pump tyres

A gobsmacked garage worker watched in disbelief as Polish Mateusz Biazik tried inflating the wheels on his mate’s Seat Leon with the device that’s more used to cleaning up crumbs.

Not to be deterred, the hungover 21-year-old then reportedly used the Seamer Road station’s water line to put some life into the tyres at around 7am on August 9.

But having knocked back five pints the night before, a seaside trip for the Doncaster driver was over before it had even started - with police called to nick him.

Now unemployed Biazik’s been banned from the road for the next 18 months, after a breathalyser test revealed he was nearly twice the legal limit.

Police have praised the court’s decision to disqualify him, claiming the quick thinking garage worker possibly prevented boozy Biazik causing serous damage.

And one police patrolman added: “It’s worrying that people like this are on our roads - I’m just glad no one was injured or worse.”

Scarborough Magistrates heard how Biazik and a group of mates had set off at sunrise for a day trip to Scarborough.

But with just a few miles to go, the driver became sleepy and asked Biazik - the only occupant with a valid licence - to take the wheel.

But speaking through his female translator, Biazik claimed he thought he was under the limit - despite enjoying a night on the sauce just hours earlier.

“(This is) perhaps a classic case of doing the wrong thing for the right reason,” said Shaun Greenan, mitigating.

“He offered to drive the short distance to Scarborough (and) having not drank since the previous evening he didn’t think he would be over the limit.”

He’d only be driving for around one kilometre when he was arrested.

And a force spokesperson said: “People need to know that there is absolutely no excuse for drink driving and if you are caught you will be treated like any other criminal and put before the courts.

“By showing total disregard for the law, this young man now has a criminal record that will affect his future life and opportunities.”

Currently Biazik is claiming benefits, but Mr Greenham said he’d worked constantly since arriving in the UK. Magistrates banned him for 18 months, while slapping him with a £380 bill in charges and costs.
