Bluebird snapped up by rival

Troubled coachbuilder Bluebird Vehicles has been purchased by a rival group.

The Eastfield company, which entered administration earlier this month, has been bought by the Woodall Nicholson Group.

The deal will see the Orion and Tucana low floor buses being brought into Woodall Nicholson’s Mellor bus business which manufactures a range of accessible bus and van conversions in its Rochdale factory.

Woodall Nicholson claims that the deal will assist in saving jobs in Scarborough as it enables Bluebird Engineering Solutions to concentrate its resources upon its growing subcontract bus manufacturing facility.

Rumours of a takeover were floating around before Bluebird entered administration but when contacted by The Scarborough News the company denied that one was imminent.

The production of Bluebird’s buses will now move to the North West following the purchase it is believed.

A number of staff at the Eastfield factory have been laid off since the start of the month.
