A new gym has opened in Scarborough town centre on the premises of what was once Boleyn’s nightclub.

The huge first-floor space on Thomas Street had lain derelict since the council revoked the nightclub’s licence in 2013.

The gym opened earlier this month after Scarborough business BodyComplete Fitness, run by director and fitness coach Chris Stringer, took over the lease.

Mr Stringer has refurbished the space in industrial style and will run personal training sessions, small-group classes, and fitness and nutrition assessments there. His programme also includes outdoor group exercise, mostly at North Bay, and outdoor running.

Originally from Manchester, Mr Stringer has lived in the Scarborough area for more than 20 years.

He set up BodyComplete Fitness five years ago and until last month operated his indoor sessions at a smaller premises above Boddy’s coffee shop on Bar Street.

BodyComplete also runs a 21-day weight-loss challenge in conjunction with Scarborough Sainsbury’s.

Mr Stringer said: “There’s nowhere else in Scarborough that gives people the opportunity to work out in such an amazing training space.

“I am super excited about it and about the facilities that it offers, such as more training equipment in a bigger space, great shower and changing facilities and a lounge and kitchen area.

“I’m also glad to bring to life a space that has been vacant for a while.”

Mr Stringer shares the training programme with his colleague Tom Hill, a Scarborough-born fitness coach who joined the team two years ago.

Mr Stringer also employs a part-time admin assistant.
